CA H and S Code 115920 (Pool Safety Act) requires Hayward pool barriers at least 60 inches tall with self-closing, self-latching gates. Building Division enforces at permit inspection.
California's Swimming Pool Safety Act (H and S Code 115920-115925) requires residential pool owners to maintain at least one of seven enumerated safety features. The default is an isolation barrier: minimum 60 inches (5 feet) high, maximum 2-inch gap under the barrier, maximum 4-inch openings, no climbable horizontals within 45 inches, and a self-closing, self-latching gate with latch at least 54 inches from ground opening outward. Alternatives include powered safety covers (ASTM F1346), pool alarms, exit alarms on dwelling doors, and self-closing/self-latching dwelling doors. Two of the seven features are required at new construction. Hayward enforces at permit inspection.
