Pool barriers are governed by NYS Residential Code Appendix G and enforced by each Schenectady County municipality's building department. Minimum 48-inch barrier, self-closing/self-latching gate, and pool alarm for post-2006 installations.
Under Appendix G of the NYS Residential Code (effective May 12, 2020), any pool over 24 inches deep must have a 48-inch barrier on all sides, a gate that self-closes and self-latches with the latch at least 40 inches above grade, and a gap of no more than 2 inches at the bottom. NY Executive Law Β§387(14) requires an ASTM F2208 pool alarm for pools built or substantially modified after December 14, 2006. Schenectady County does not issue pool permits; the municipal building department does.
Up to $5,000 per day; Certificate of Compliance withheld until fencing and alarm pass inspection.
