Schenectady restricts on-street parking through posted signs, snow emergencies, and alternate-side rules in several neighborhoods. Vehicles may not be parked on a city street in the same spot for more than 48 hours, must be at least 15 feet from a fire hydrant, and must be moved promptly when snow emergencies are declared, or risk towing and ticketing.
Schenectady regulates on-street parking under Code Chapter 244 (Vehicles and Traffic). General rules prohibit parking in the same spot on a public street for more than 48 consecutive hours; vehicles left longer may be ticketed or towed as abandoned. Vehicles must be parked at least 15 feet from a fire hydrant, 20 feet from a crosswalk, and 30 feet from a stop sign or traffic signal.
During snow emergencies, the Mayor or Department of Public Works may declare a parking ban on snow-emergency routes (typically the main arterials and steep streets). Vehicles left on these streets during a declared ban are subject to towing and a tow fee in addition to the parking fine. Bans are publicized on the city website, local media, and via reverse-911 calls in some districts.
Several downtown blocks and historic Stockade neighborhood streets have posted alternate-side parking rules for street sweeping; signs designate which side of the street parking is allowed on which days. Overnight parking restrictions (usually 2:00 AM β 6:00 AM) apply in select districts and are also posted. Permit-only resident zones exist near Union College and some hospital areas.
Standard parking ticket fines run $25 to $50 per violation. Snow-emergency violations carry a $50β$100 fine plus tow fees of $150 or more and daily storage. Repeat scofflaws (3+ unpaid tickets) may have their vehicle booted. Pay tickets online via the city website or contest in City Court.
