Residential pool fences in Vienna must comply with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC) and Town Code. Minimum 48-inch barrier height, self-closing and self-latching gates, and no climbable horizontal members on the outside face. Requirements apply to pools over 24 inches deep.
Swimming pool barrier requirements in Vienna follow the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC), which incorporates the International Residential Code pool barrier provisions. Any pool over 24 inches deep must have a barrier at least 48 inches tall (measured from the ground on the outside of the barrier), with no openings that allow a 4-inch sphere to pass through. Gates must open outward away from the pool, be self-closing and self-latching, with latches at least 54 inches above the ground. Horizontal members on the outside face must be spaced at least 45 inches apart (to prevent climbing), or the inside face must be smooth. Fences with vertical members spaced more than 1.75 inches apart are not compliant. Homes that use a wall of the house as part of the barrier must have pool alarms on doors leading to the pool. Above-ground pools may use the pool wall as the barrier if the wall is at least 48 inches and the ladder is removable or lockable. Hot tubs and spas with safety covers meeting ASTM F1346 are exempt from barrier requirements. Building permits are required for all pools (in-ground and above-ground) and include barrier inspection. Violations can result in stop-work orders, fines, and require retroactive compliance. HOAs may require additional setbacks or aesthetic screening.
