Vienna, VA Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Fence height standards in the Town of Vienna are set out in Chapter 18 (Zoning) of the Town Code, including Section 18-410, which is administered by the Department of Planning and Zoning. Fences in front yards are generally capped at 4 feet in height, while interior side yard and rear yard fences may be up to 6 feet tall. On corner lots, fences may not exceed 4 feet within the area between the extension of the neighbor's front building line and the right-of-way, which preserves visibility along streets. The corner side yard adjacent to a street is also typically subject to the 4-foot front-yard limit rather than the 6-foot side-yard standard. All fences must have the finished side facing the street and adjacent properties, and sight-distance triangles at intersections (Section 18-412) further restrict obstructions. Temporary construction fencing is exempt from these height standards but must still comply with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code. Fence permits are required from the Department of Planning and Zoning before installation. Virginia Code Sec. 15.2-2280 provides the Town with general zoning authority to adopt these regulations.
