Clovis allows recreational backyard fires in approved portable devices such as fire pits, chimineas, and outdoor fireplaces. Fires must burn only clean dry wood or charcoal and must be attended at all times. All backyard fires are prohibited during SJVAPCD Spare the Air days.
The Clovis Fire Department permits recreational backyard fires in approved portable devices including manufactured fire pits, chimineas, and outdoor fireplaces. These fires must burn only clean, dry, untreated wood or charcoal and must not produce excessive smoke. Burning of trash, yard waste, painted wood, or treated lumber is prohibited under SJVAPCD rules. Fires must be attended by a responsible adult at all times and a means of extinguishment such as a garden hose or fire extinguisher must be readily available. Portable fire devices should be placed on a non-combustible surface and positioned at least 15 feet from structures, fences, and overhanging branches. Permanent outdoor fireplaces and built-in fire pits may require a building permit from the Clovis Building Division. During SJVAPCD-declared Spare the Air days and Check Before You Burn episodes, all recreational burning is prohibited regardless of the device used. California Health and Safety Code 13113.7 gives fire officials the authority to order any outdoor fire extinguished if it poses a threat to public safety or creates a smoke nuisance.
Administrative citations from Clovis Fire Department for unattended or nuisance fires. SJVAPCD fines for burning on no-burn days. The fire department can order immediate extinguishment of any fire deemed hazardous.
