Small backyard recreational fires are permitted in Dearborn when contained in an approved pit or appliance, burning only clean wood, attended by an adult, and kept 15 feet from any structure or combustible.
Dearborn allows recreational backyard fires under the same rules governing fire pits. The fire must burn clean, seasoned wood or charcoal, be contained in a noncombustible ring, chiminea, or manufactured pit, and remain attended by a responsible adult with water or extinguisher ready. Minimum 15-foot clearance from buildings, fences, and combustibles applies. Fires may not produce smoke that creates a nuisance for neighbors or trigger 911 calls. During high wind, drought advisories, or air quality action days, the Fire Marshal can suspend recreational burning citywide. Burning leaves, construction debris, pallets with nails, treated lumber, or garbage is prohibited under EGLE air rules. Ashes should be cold before disposal in metal containers. Complaints from neighbors about smoke may trigger Fire Department response and extinguishment orders.
