Dearborn, MI Fence Regulations: Neighbor Fence Rules (2026)

Sec. 5-127(5) assigns line-fence upkeep by where the posts sit. On east-west streets the owner whose property holds the posts must build, replace, or repair the front half of that fence plus the rear half of the fence across from it; the boards or wire side faces the neighbor. Along rear lot lines, the post-side owner maintains the half running toward the higher house numbers on the block, while the adjacent owner covers the other half. Sec. 5-122(b) separately lets neighbors split the cost of building a new shared fence equally by mutual agreement, or either owner may build one alone at full expense under Sec. 5-122(a).
