Hemet has no stand-alone backyard-fire ordinance. Small recreational fires for warmth or cooking are allowed under the California Fire Code if kept 25 feet from structures, attended at all times, and never lit during hazardous/no-burn conditions. Burning yard waste or trash is prohibited.
Hemet does not publish its own backyard recreational-fire ordinance, so backyard fires are governed by the California Fire Code (adopted by the City) and South Coast AQMD air rules. The Fire Code permits a "recreational fire" - an outdoor fire for cooking, warmth, or recreation - but it must not be within 25 feet of a structure or combustible material (Section 307.4.2), and the surrounding area must be cleared of anything that could spread fire before lighting. Portable outdoor fireplaces and chimineas must stay 15 feet from structures, with an exception for one- and two-family dwellings (Section 307.4.3). Any backyard fire must be constantly attended until completely out, with a fire extinguisher or hose/water source available (Section 307.5). Critically, the fire code official can prohibit recreational and open burning whenever weather or local conditions make fire hazardous (Section 307.1.1); in Hemet's wildfire-prone foothill setting, that means no backyard fires on Red Flag, high-wind, or declared no-burn days. Burning leaves, brush, or trash is never allowed - the City states open burning is prohibited by the Fire Department and AQMD. Hemet is in the South Coast Air Basin, so check South Coast AQMD for residential wood-smoke no-burn advisories. When in doubt, contact the Hemet Fire Department before lighting any backyard fire.
A backyard fire that ignores Fire Code clearances, is left unattended, or is lit during a hazardous-conditions or no-burn period can be ordered extinguished and may draw California Fire Code citations from the Hemet Fire Department, plus AQMD enforcement if it involves prohibited burning. Specific city fine amounts are not separately published.
