Hemet has no special barbecue ordinance; residential grilling follows the California Fire Code. Charcoal and open-flame grills generally must stay 10 feet from combustible construction, with an exception for small LP-gas grill cylinders, and one- and two-family homes have additional leeway.
Backyard barbecuing in Hemet is governed by the California Fire Code the City adopts, not a separate barbecue ordinance. Under Fire Code Section 308 (Open Flames), charcoal burners and other open-flame cooking devices generally must not be operated within 10 feet of combustible construction. The Fire Code provides an exception for LP-gas cooking devices that have containers with a water capacity not greater than 2-1/2 pounds (Section 308.1.4), and a separate exception that relaxes these limits for one- and two-family dwellings - which is why typical single-family-home backyard barbecuing with a standard propane grill and a 20-lb cylinder is permitted when done safely outdoors. The bigger restriction in California applies to multifamily housing: state code and many local rules prohibit using or storing LP-gas/charcoal grills on the balconies of, or within 10 feet of, apartment and condominium buildings. Grills should be used outdoors only, kept clear of combustible materials, attended while lit, and never used during a declared hazardous-conditions period. Propane cylinders should be stored outdoors away from ignition sources (see Hemet propane storage). During high fire danger or Red Flag conditions in Hemet's foothill area, the fire code official may restrict open-flame use. Apartment and condo residents should confirm grill rules with their property management and the Hemet Fire Department.
Operating a grill too close to combustible construction, or using charcoal/LP-gas grills on multifamily balconies where prohibited, can result in California Fire Code citations and orders to correct from the Hemet Fire Department, and may violate property-management rules. Specific city barbecue fines are not separately published; the adopted Fire Code is the enforcement basis.
