Hemet allows currently registered recreational vehicles, trailers and boats 22 to 40 feet long to be parked in a side or rear yard setback when screened by six-foot-high solid fencing. Front-yard RV parking is not permitted, and no overnight street parking is allowed citywide.
The City of Hemet regulates recreational vehicle, trailer and boat storage on residential property through its Code Compliance rules. According to the City's Code Compliance FAQ, "Currently registered vehicles, including non-motorized vehicles between 22 and 40 feet in length, may be parked in the side or rear yard setback area when screened by six-foot high solid fencing." The storage area is not required to be paved, but "the area shall be maintained free of weeds, junk and debris." Front yards may not be used for this kind of large-vehicle storage. Trailers attached to a towing vehicle are not to be disconnected on the public street. Because Hemet Municipal Code Section 78-107 prohibits overnight parking on all city streets and alleys, an RV or boat trailer cannot simply be left overnight at the curb. This is stricter than the California Vehicle Code, which by itself would only impose the 72-hour limit (Vehicle Code 22651(k)). Hemet's approach is to keep oversized recreational equipment off the street and behind screening on private property rather than visible in front yards. Owners storing an RV, travel trailer or boat should verify their specific setback and screening dimensions with Hemet Code Compliance before relying on a side-yard spot.
Storing an RV, trailer or boat in a front yard, on an unpaved unscreened area, or overnight on a city street may be cited as a code-compliance violation. Report or ask questions at Hemet Code Compliance.
