In Hemet, vehicles may not be parked on a front yard, lawn or unpaved area except briefly while being washed. Vehicles offered for sale may only be displayed on a paved residential driveway. Larger registered vehicles must go to a screened side or rear yard.
Hemet's Code Compliance rules govern how residents may park on their own property, with an emphasis on keeping vehicles off lawns and unpaved surfaces. The City's FAQ states that "Vehicles may not be parked on any front yard, lawn or unpaved area except during the time the vehicle is being washed, and once complete it must be moved to an appropriate location to park." In other words, only a paved driveway or approved parking surface is acceptable for routine front-of-house parking; pulling onto the grass or dirt is a violation except for a brief wash. The City also limits vehicle sales from the home: "Vehicles may only be displayed for sale on private residential property, on a paved driveway." For larger registered vehicles, trailers and boats between 22 and 40 feet, the front yard and driveway are not the answer - those belong in a screened side or rear yard setback behind six-foot solid fencing. Because Hemet bans overnight street parking citywide under Section 78-107, an adequate, paved driveway is often the practical place for residents to keep daily-use vehicles overnight. These are local code-compliance standards rather than California Vehicle Code provisions, which generally do not regulate private-property yard parking. Residents unsure whether their surface qualifies as paved or where setbacks fall should contact Hemet Code Compliance before relying on a spot.
Parking on a front yard, lawn or unpaved area (other than briefly while washing), or displaying a for-sale vehicle anywhere other than a paved residential driveway, may be cited as a code-compliance violation.
