Palm Springs regulates driveway widths, materials, and curb cuts under Palm Springs Municipal Code Title 93 (Zoning) and Title 14 (Streets). Residential driveways generally may not exceed 20 feet wide at the curb in single-family zones, and curb cuts require an encroachment permit from the Engineering Division. Mid-century modern preservation districts impose additional material and design standards.
Palm Springs driveways are governed by the zoning code (PSMC Title 93) and street encroachment standards under Title 14. In R-1 single-family residential zones, a driveway typically may not exceed 20 feet wide where it meets the public right-of-way, and no more than 40 percent of the front yard may be paved in hardscape. Any new or widened curb cut requires an encroachment permit from the Public Works/Engineering Division, with plans showing drainage, sight distance at intersections, and compliance with ADA ramp standards where sidewalks exist. Corner lots must preserve a visibility triangle free of obstructions taller than 30 inches. In the Historic Preservation Districts (including Tahquitz River Estates, Twin Palms, and Vista Las Palmas) and the Class 1 and 2 historic sites, driveway materials, colors, and configurations may be reviewed by the Historic Site Preservation Board under PSMC Chapter 8.05 to ensure compatibility with the original mid-century character. Vehicles must be parked on an approved paved surface; parking on bare dirt, landscaping, or decomposed granite that is not an improved driveway is prohibited in front yards under PSMC Ch. 93.06. Recreational vehicles, boats, and trailers have separate rules covered under the RV/boat parking ordinance. Driveways may not be used to store inoperable vehicles, and gates opening onto public streets must be set back sufficiently for a vehicle to clear the sidewalk while waiting.
Specific penalty amounts for this ordinance are not published in a publicly accessible fine schedule. Contact Palm Springs code enforcement directly for current fines, enforcement procedures, and hearing options.
