Tyler requires improved and vacant lots to be kept clear of vegetation over 12 inches and free of fallen limbs and brush. Code Enforcement inspects, tags, and can abate at the owner's expense.
Under City Code Sec. 18-20, it is unlawful to let uncultivated vegetation exceed 12 inches on improved lots inside the city or within 5,000 feet of it. Accumulations of fallen trees, limbs, brush, and underbrush are also prohibited. Vacant lots qualify for an exception if vegetation is held at or below 12 inches within 100 feet of every perimeter; ornamental grasses are exempt. Texas has no statewide defensible-space law like California's, so vegetation and fire-fuel control around structures runs through this nuisance ordinance and the Fire Marshal during dry spells.
Code Enforcement issues a notice with a deadline to correct. If ignored, the city mows or clears the lot and bills the owner, adding administrative fees and a lien against the property.
