Fire pit rules in Auburn, AL β also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances β cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
The Auburn Fire Department does NOT require a burn permit for fires contained in a device manufactured for cooking (grills, smokers, BBQ pits, pizza ovens) or for heating devices like patio heaters, chimineas, and fireplaces. An uncontained ground fire pit used to burn debris, however, does require a free burn permit.
The City of Auburn Fire Department draws a clear line between contained appliances and open ground fires. According to the official Auburn burn-permit page, NO permit is required when the fire is contained inside a device specifically manufactured for cooking (gas or charcoal grills, smokers, BBQ pits, outdoor pizza ovens) or inside a device made for heating that uses wood, vegetation, coal, propane, kerosene, or fuel oil (construction heaters, patio heaters, chimineas, fireplaces). This means a store-bought, manufactured patio fire pit / chiminea used for heating generally falls in the no-permit category. A permit IS required for uncontained fires - including burn barrels, ground fire pits, bonfires, brush/limb burning, and recreational fires used for debris disposal. Permitted burns must be at least 500 feet from the nearest occupied dwelling (other than the one on the burn property), may only run from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with no material added after 3:00 p.m., must burn only natural vegetation and untreated wood, must be attended continuously and fully extinguished daily, and are not allowed during overcast, rain, drought, or extremely dry conditions. Permits are free and valid for 30 days. To schedule the required site inspection, contact the Auburn Fire Department at 334-501-3231, ext. 4.
The Auburn Fire Department reserves the authority to impose additional conditions or to order extinguishment of any unpermitted or hazardous fire. Burning that escapes control may also trigger Alabama Forestry Commission penalties under state burn law (Ala. Code 9-13-11), where careless burning can be charged as a Class B misdemeanor.
