Alabama allows consumer fireworks, but Lee County's two cities clamp down hard: Opelika bans them outright inside the city, and Auburn permits only ground-based fireworks on July 4 and New Year's. Buyers must be 16 or older.
State law (Ala. Code §8-17-210 et seq.) legalizes DOT Class C common fireworks, sets no statewide discharge calendar, and expressly lets cities restrict further. Opelika uses that power to prohibit using or exploding any fireworks within the city. Auburn allows only non-aerial, non-exploding fireworks such as sparklers, fountains, and ground spinners, and only on July 4 from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and from 6 p.m. Dec. 31 to 1 a.m. Jan. 1; Roman candles, firecrackers, and anything that leaves the ground are illegal there. Buyers must be at least 16. Unincorporated Lee County follows the permissive state rules year-round.
Unlawful fireworks use in Auburn draws up to a $1,000 fine and 90 days in jail; reckless discharge, up to $5,000 and a year. Opelika cites any fireworks use inside the city.
