Washington restricts consumer fireworks to specific dates and types under RCW 70.77. State law sets minimum standards, prohibits illegal aerials, and allows local governments to enact stricter rules but not weaker ones.
RCW 70.77 (the State Fireworks Law) regulates the manufacture, sale, possession, and discharge of fireworks statewide. Consumer fireworks may legally be sold and discharged only between June 28 and July 5, and December 27 through January 1, with hours specified by statute. Bottle rockets, missiles, and other aerial devices are prohibited statewide except for licensed displays. Local governments may impose stricter limitations or outright bans (RCW 70.77.250), but cannot expand state-allowed periods or types. Violations are a gross misdemeanor under RCW 70.77.488.
Possession or discharge of illegal fireworks is a gross misdemeanor with penalties up to 364 days in jail and a $5,000 fine; some violations are class C felonies.
