Outdoor burning rules in Clinton, MA β also called the burn ban, open burning, or fire restriction ordinance β set when you can burn yard waste, debris, or run a recreational fire.
Clinton allows residential open burning only between January 15 and May 1 with a daily permit from the Clinton Fire Department. Open burn hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. To obtain permission to burn, residents must call the Public Safety Dispatch Center at (978) 365-4165 Option 0. Clinton's open-burning program implements MassDEP 310 CMR 7.07 (Air Pollution Control) and 527 CMR 1.00 Β§10.14 (State Fire Marshal). The Massachusetts open burn season runs from January 15 to May 1; outside that window, residential open burning is prohibited statewide. During the season, the Clinton Fire Department issues open-brush burning permits on a daily basis. Residents must call Public Safety Dispatch at (978) 365-4165 Option 0 to obtain or activate permission to burn. Permitted hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The burn must be at least 75 feet from any dwelling, on the property where the material was generated, attended by a responsible adult at all times, and accompanied by water, a hose, or other extinguishing equipment. Permitted materials are brush, cane, driftwood, and forestry debris; prohibited materials include leaves, grass, hay, stumps, tires, demolition and construction debris, treated lumber, and household trash. On high-wind or red-flag weather days the fire department may suspend all permits.
Burning without an active permit, outside the January 15 - May 1 window, or with prohibited material violates 310 CMR 7.07 and 527 CMR 1.00. MassDEP may assess civil penalties up to $25,000 per day per violation. Clinton Fire Department may issue municipal fines, revoke the permit, order immediate extinguishment, and bill the responsible party for fire-suppression response.
