Detroit Fire Department adopts the Michigan Fire Prevention Code, capping residential propane cylinders, banning indoor storage above one-pound, and requiring listed appliances and ventilated outdoor placement.
Michigan adopts the International Fire Code with state amendments, enforced in Detroit by DFD Fire Marshal. Residential occupancies may store no more than two propane cylinders larger than one pound outside a building, each not exceeding 20 pounds for grills, with totals limited per dwelling unit. Indoor storage of cylinders larger than one-pound disposable bottles is prohibited in living spaces, and cylinders cannot be kept in basements or under stairwells. Bulk tanks of 125 gallons or more require permitted installation, separation distances from openings and ignition sources, and listed regulators. DFD inspects propane use at festivals, food trucks, and construction sites separately under Chapter 8 and the special-event code.
Fire code propane violations carry civil infractions $100-$500 per cylinder; repeated or hazardous storage can prompt seizure and Chapter 8 misdemeanor charges.
