Detroit's Property Maintenance Code (Chapter 8, Article XV) requires single-station smoke alarms in every existing one- and two-family dwelling not already equipped, and in rental dwelling units the alarms must sit within or just outside sleeping areas on each level. In one- and two-family dwellings, alarms may run on battery power or be hardwired to a permanent circuit, but any hardwired unit needs a battery backup for interruptions in the primary power. The Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department (BSEED) enforces this article citywide.
