Virginia adopts the Statewide Fire Prevention Code applying uniform NFPA 58 propane storage and handling standards across all jurisdictions, regulating tank placement, capacity, and installation requirements consistently.
Virginia Code Section 27-94 establishes the Statewide Fire Prevention Code (SFPC), which incorporates the International Fire Code and NFPA 58 Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code. The SFPC governs propane container placement distances from buildings, property lines, and ignition sources, along with installation requirements for systems exceeding specified capacities. Localities cannot adopt fire prevention regulations more or less stringent than the SFPC except where state law expressly permits. Enforcement is handled by the State Fire Marshal or local fire officials.
SFPC violations may be charged as Class 1 misdemeanors with fines up to $2,500 per offense, plus correction orders and potential injunctive relief to remove unsafe installations.
