Hampton, VA Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Hampton's zoning ordinance makes it unlawful to park a passenger car or permitted commercial vehicle on grass, dirt, or other unimproved ground in the street-facing yard of a one-family, two-family, or duplex lot. The vehicle must sit entirely within a driveway of improved surface material running continuously from the right-of-way to the parking spot (ribbon driveways excepted). Nonconforming gravel, stone, or oyster-shell driveways already in place as of January 1, 2022 may keep being used, but only within their existing footprint. Limited exceptions allow yard parking during permitted special events, city street-sweeping or construction closures, flooding or severe weather, active vehicle washing, posted no-parking blocks, or loading/unloading for up to 24 hours. The rule took effect July 1, 2022.
