Hampton, VA Trash & Recycling: Holiday Pickup Schedule (2026)

Hampton does not write the holiday calendar into its code. Sec. 32.2-21(b) says "The department shall announce a holiday collection schedule for those holidays that fall on a regularly scheduled collection day," and Sec. 32.2-1 defines the department as the department of public works. Chapter 32.2 names no holidays, dates or make-up day, so the Hampton Citizen's Calendar for 2026 and 2027 is the schedule that governs.

The 2026 list ends with Veteran's Day on Nov. 11, Thanksgiving Day on Nov. 26 and Christmas Day on Dec. 25. The 2027 list opens with New Year's Day on Jan. 1, then Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 18 and President's Day on Feb. 15, and later shows Thanksgiving Day on Nov. 25 and Christmas Day Obs. on Dec. 24.

The printed rule is short: "If a city holiday is also your curbside collection day, put containers out by 7 a.m. WEDNESDAY" instead. The Public Works FAQ adds that a recycling collection scheduled on the holiday is also collected on the Wednesday of that week, and that garbage, bulk trash, limbs, yard waste and tires all share one collection day each week.

Veteran's Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, is on the 2026 list too. The FAQ and the calendar's rule text both name Wednesday as the holiday collection day, and the calendar key lists an ALTERNATE PICK-UP DAY shading beside CITY HOLIDAYS, GREEN RECYCLING DAYS and BLUE RECYCLING DAYS, so read the grid for your week and confirm with 3-1-1. The Friday after Thanksgiving is not named on the 2026 holiday list.

The city publishes the holiday collection schedule in the newspaper and through the 3-1-1 Customer Call Center, and the calendar points readers to HAMPTON.GOV/ENEWS for holiday updates. The code also sets a placement window. Sec. 32.2-22(c) allows containers curbside no earlier than 3:00 p.m. on the day before the scheduled collection day and requires removal no later than midnight on the day of collection, and the calendar repeats "Remove container by midnight after collection." Sec. 32.2-22(a) also lets the director cancel collection under circumstances that prevent safe collection, including states of emergency and flooding.
