Full Breakdown

Under Hampton City Code § 32.2-21, the Department of Public Works collects refuse from serviced premises once weekly and recycling every other week, except as otherwise provided in the chapter or during a declared emergency. Collections are limited to the contents of the city-provided refuse and recycling containers, and lids must remain closed on both containers at all times. The department separately announces a holiday collection schedule whenever a holiday falls on a regular pickup day. Hampton is an independent city with no surrounding county government, so this ordinance is the only refuse-collection authority residents answer to.

Violations & Fines

Overfilled or open-lid containers can be left uncollected at the department's discretion, and placement or preparation violations are enforced under the chapter's notice and civil-penalty provisions, §§ 32.2-6 and 32.2-7.
