Allen County has no separate propane-storage ordinance. Residential LP-gas tanks are regulated by the Indiana Fire Code and Fuel Gas Code, which adopt NFPA 58, and are permitted and inspected through the Allen County Building Department.
There is no Allen County Code article specifically governing residential propane storage; the county applies the statewide Indiana Fire Prevention Code (675 IAC 22, based on the 2012 International Fire Code) and Indiana Fuel Gas Code (675 IAC 25). Both incorporate NFPA 58, the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code, for storage, handling, and installation of LP-gas systems. Under those standards, residential containers up to 125 water-gallon capacity may be placed against the dwelling, must be secured on a stable base, and larger tanks must meet setback distances from buildings and property lines. The Fort Wayne-Allen County Building Department handles permitting and inspection.
Non-compliant installations are enforced through state fire and building code by the Building Department; violations can require correction, re-inspection, or removal.
