Colorado adopts NFPA 58 Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code by reference under CRS 8-20-232, applying uniform propane storage, container, and installation rules to all jurisdictions statewide.
Under CRS 8-20-232 and 8 CCR 1507-39, the Colorado Division of Oil and Public Safety adopts the latest edition of NFPA 58 LP-Gas Code as the statewide standard for propane container installation, storage separation distances, and dispensing. All LP-gas dealers, installers, and bulk plants must comply regardless of municipal rules. The Division licenses LP-gas operators under CRS 8-20-202. Local fire codes may add inspection or permit fees but cannot weaken NFPA 58 separation, venting, or container marking requirements.
Operating without a license or violating NFPA 58 rules can result in license revocation and civil penalties up to $5,000 per violation under CRS 8-20-206.
