Ohio Fire Code section 308.1.4 (OAC 1301:7-7-03) prohibits operating charcoal burners and other open-flame cooking devices on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction. LP-gas containers larger than one pound (2.5-pound water capacity) are generally not allowed on combustible balconies of apartments and condos, meaning the typical 20-pound grill tank cannot be used or stored on a wooden apartment deck. The rule exempts one- and two-family dwellings, so single-family and duplex owners in Summit County may use and store grills on their own decks. Always store propane cylinders outdoors, upright, away from ignition sources, and never inside a home or garage.
Fire departments may order removal of a prohibited grill or tank; violations of the Ohio Fire Code can bring correction orders, citations, and fines, and may void rental leases or insurance.
