Washoe County follows the Nevada-adopted International Fire Code. In residential/congested areas the aggregate LP-gas storage cannot exceed 2,000 gallons water capacity, and tanks must meet Table 6104.3 setbacks (a 500-gallon aboveground tank needs about 10 feet from buildings and lot lines).
LP-gas storage is governed by IFC Chapter 61, adopted by the Nevada State Fire Marshal and enforced by TMFPD. Within limits protecting heavily populated or congested areas, the aggregate capacity of any one installation may not exceed 2,000 gallons water capacity (IFC 6104.2). Container location must comply with Table 6104.3, which sets minimum distances from buildings, public ways, and adjoining property lines by tank size. Aboveground containers of 501-2,000 gallons require 25 feet from buildings; a 500-gallon tank requires about 10 feet from buildings and lot lines; small under-125-gallon tanks require as little as 5-10 feet. Larger installations may need a Fire Code operational permit.
Installations exceeding capacity limits or violating clearance distances are enforced by the fire code official under the adopted IFC, with correction orders and permit conditions.
