Dublin enforces the Ohio Residential Code (OAC 4101:8) requiring smoke alarms on every floor, outside each sleeping area, and inside each bedroom. Hardwired interconnected alarms with battery backup are required in new construction.
Existing homes must maintain functional smoke alarms. Rental units in Dublin must have working smoke alarms at the start of each tenancy under landlord habitability obligations (ORC 5321.04). Carbon monoxide alarms are required where fuel-fired appliances or attached garages are present. Washington Township Fire participates in free smoke alarm installation programs for qualifying residents.
Landlords who fail to provide working smoke alarms may face tenant rent-escrow actions and building code penalties up to 500 dollars per violation.
