Livonia requires working smoke alarms in all residential units under the Michigan Building Code, the International Residential Code, and state rental inspection rules.
Under the 2015 Michigan Residential Code adopted by Livonia, smoke alarms must be installed in every sleeping room, immediately outside each sleeping area, and on every story of a dwelling including basements. Alarms installed in new construction or added during substantial remodels must be hardwired with battery backup and interconnected so that activation of one sounds all alarms. Carbon monoxide alarms are required outside sleeping areas in homes with attached garages or fuel-burning appliances under MCL 125.1504d. Rental properties are inspected by the Livonia Inspection Department on a certificate-of-compliance cycle and working alarms are a condition of the rental certificate. Landlords who fail to provide functional alarms face civil infractions and can lose rental certification. Test alarms monthly and replace detectors every 10 years.
