Bay County does not use California-style mapped fire-severity zones, but the danger is concrete: subdivisions push into pine flatwoods, and Michael's 2018 destruction left vast fields of dead, dried timber that turned into wildfire fuel. In March 2022 the Bertha Swamp Road and Adkins Avenue fires burned across that fuel and destroyed homes near Panama City. The Florida Forest Service recommends 0 to 30 feet of lean, clean, green space around the home, reduced fuels out to 100 feet, ember-resistant vents, and metal or Class A roofing. Spring lightning and drought are the main ignition drivers.
Florida has no county wildfire-zone penalty schedule, but ignoring defensible-space and brush-clearance notices brings code-compliance fines and county abatement. Insurers increasingly require Firewise mitigation before writing or renewing coverage near the pine.
