Western unincorporated Palm Beach County, including areas around Loxahatchee, The Acreage, Loxahatchee Groves, and the Everglades Agricultural Area, sits within Florida Forest Service-mapped wildland-urban interface (WUI). PBCFR maintains mutual aid with FFS for wildfire response.
FFS Wildfire Risk Assessment maps significant wildfire hazard across western PBC pine flatwoods, palmetto prairies, and saw grass marsh fringes. The 2008 Palm Beach Country Estates fire and recurring J.W. Corbett WMA burns illustrate seasonal risk during the January-May dry season. PBCFR Wildland Division responds with brush trucks, and FFS Okeechobee District provides Type 6 engines, dozers, and aerial assets. Communities including Caloosa, Indian Trails Improvement District (The Acreage), and Loxahatchee Groves participate in the National Firewise USA program. Florida Building Code does not impose statewide WUI ignition-resistant construction requirements (unlike California Chapter 7A), but PBC ULDC Article 5 requires landscape buffers and setbacks from preserve areas. Homeowners are encouraged to maintain Zone 1 (0-30 ft) lean-clean-green and Zone 2 (30-100 ft) reduced fuel.
