Wyoming allows law abiding adults to carry concealed firearms in their vehicles without a permit under W.S. 6-8-104, and statewide preemption bars cities and counties from imposing inconsistent vehicle carry rules on residents and visitors traveling Wyoming roads.
Wyoming Statute 6-8-104 authorizes any United States citizen or lawful permanent resident at least 21 years old who is not otherwise prohibited from possessing a firearm to carry a concealed weapon, including in a private vehicle, without first obtaining a state permit. The same chapter creates an optional concealed firearm permit issued by the Attorney General for reciprocity with other states. Wyoming Statute 6-8-401 broadly preempts local regulation of firearms, prohibiting cities, towns, and counties from regulating the ownership, possession, transportation, carrying, transfer, sale, or storage of firearms or ammunition. Localities therefore cannot ban loaded firearms in vehicles, require unloading or case storage in transit, or impose vehicle parking lot firearm bans on lawful occupants beyond limited statutory exceptions for specific government buildings.
Carrying while a prohibited person, in a posted prohibited location such as a courtroom or school, or while intoxicated may be charged as a misdemeanor or felony depending on the circumstances under W.S. 6-8-104 and related statutes.
