Jackson, MS Holiday Decorations: Holiday Light Rules (2026)

Jackson does not regulate residential holiday light installation, removal dates, or brightness through municipal code. Decorative lighting is permitted year-round on private property at single-family and multi-family residences. The City noise ordinance prohibits emitting noise that crosses a property line in excess of the sound-pressure-level limits set in the ordinance's Table A by district and time of day; the chief of police or designee is authorized to take sound measurements. Amplified music in a holiday display that is plainly audible across a property line during nighttime hours is a routine basis for citation. Jackson has no city-wide dark-sky ordinance, but neighbors may pursue private-nuisance claims in Hinds County Circuit Court when light is directed into bedroom windows. Mississippi has no statutory equivalent to California Civil Code §4710 (which protects religious door displays from HOA bans); HOA covenants in Jackson subdivisions are governed by Mississippi common law of restrictive covenants and generally enforceable unless they violate fair-housing law, the Fair Housing Act, or public policy. Properties in local historic districts (Belhaven, Belhaven Heights, Farish Street, Greater Belhaven, etc.) may face Historic Preservation Commission review for permanent attachments; temporary seasonal decorations are typically not regulated by the HPC.
