Jackson, MS Fire Regulations: Fireworks (2026)

General Code Section 86-21, adopted by Ord. No. 2023-17(5) on July 18, 2023, regulates consumer fireworks, low-impact fireworks, articles pyrotechnic, and public displays citywide. on the day before, the day of, or the day after eight recognized holidays: Martin Luther King Jr. on New Year's Day itself. Fireworks may never be aimed at a person, animal or vehicle, or set off within 300 yards of a railroad depot, warehouse, hospital or asylum, or within 300 feet of any spot where fireworks are sold. Using them on public, school, church or another person's property without permission is a separate violation, as is use by an unsupervised minor under 16 or use while intoxicated.

Retail sales are seasonal only: Section 86-21(c) bars selling fireworks before June 15 or after July 5, and before December 5 or after January 2. A retail stand needs a $250 license per location, city inspection sign-off, no-smoking signage, and must sit at least 500 feet from residential property, 2,500 feet from another fireworks outlet, and 300 feet from any gasoline pump or filling station. Public fireworks displays require a Fire Marshal permit under 86-21(e)-(g), with the applicant furnishing a bond or insurance certificate of at least $100,000, and displays may not fire within 200 feet of an occupied dwelling. Sky lanterns, unmanned free-floating devices lofted by open flame, are banned outright under 86-21(b)(9) because of their unpredictable flight path and fire risk.
