San Antonio, TX Holiday Decorations: Lawn Ornament Rules (2026)

San Antonio does not have a city ordinance restricting residential lawn ornaments, statuary, religious displays, or other yard decorations. Items may remain year-round on private property. Decorations cannot block sidewalks, encroach into the public right-of-way, or create visibility hazards at corner lots (UDC § 35-514 visibility triangle). Political signs receive special protection — courts have struck down many municipal restrictions on residential political signs under the First Amendment, and San Antonio does not impose dimensional limits on residential political signs on private property. Religious displays (nativities, menorahs, etc.) on private property are likewise unrestricted by the city. The general property maintenance provisions of City Code Chapter 21 may apply if decorations become so dilapidated or numerous as to create a junk/debris violation. Office of Historic Preservation guidelines may apply for permanent statuary in historic districts. HOAs commonly impose architectural-review requirements on permanent ornaments and statues, and Texas Property Code Ch. 202 generally permits these restrictions while limiting some flag and religious-display bans.
