Under Florida's home-based business law, Lake County can regulate signage only as it does for other residences. The county's home-occupation code historically allowed one small, non-illuminated window sign; the property, as viewed from the street, must stay consistent with the residential neighborhood.
Lake County's Land Development Regulations Β§10.01.05 (as amended to comply with FS 559.955) permits no external evidence that a dwelling is used for a home occupation other than one unanimated, non-illuminated, flat window sign of not more than 144 square inches. FS 559.955 reinforces that any external modification for a home-based business must conform to the residential character and architectural aesthetics of the neighborhood. Larger freestanding, illuminated, or animated commercial signs are not allowed at a residential home business. Inside incorporated cities, the city sign code applies instead.
A prohibited or oversized home-business sign is a code-enforcement violation; the county can order removal and impose daily fines under its code-enforcement process until the sign is removed or brought into compliance.
