No flashing signs, illuminated signs, window banners, lawn signs, or sandwich boards are permitted. Temporary real estate signs and political signs are governed separately. Landmark buildings and historic districts require Landmarks Preservation Commission approval for any sign, even compliant nameplates. Co-op and condo boards often prohibit all exterior signage regardless of zoning allowance. Violations are enforced by the NYC Department of Buildings with fines.
