Signs, window displays, and outdoor displays in connection with a home occupation are completely prohibited under LAMC 12.05 A.16. This includes business name signs, advertising, and any visible indication of commercial activity from outside the dwelling. Violations can result in $250 fines and potential discontinuance of the home occupation.
LAMC Section 12.21 A.7 prohibits signs identifying home occupations in A and R zones. Only one unlighted nameplate per dwelling showing the occupant's name (not the business name) is allowed, limited to 1.5 square feet in R zones and 3 square feet in A zones. Section 12.05 A.16 reinforces this by prohibiting signs, window displays, and outside displays in connection with any home occupation. Activities associated with the home occupation may not be visible from outside the dwelling. Advertising for the home occupation may not contain the address of the dwelling unit. No illuminated, flashing, moving, or animated signs are permitted in residential zones.
Sign violations in residential zones are subject to LADBS enforcement. Administrative fines of $250 for first violation and $500 for repeat offenses apply under Section 12.05 A.16.
