Lake County's suburban home occupation rules bar any external change that alters the residential character of the lot and prohibit outdoor display of goods, effectively barring commercial signage. In residential and A-1 districts, only limited nonresidential and identification signs are allowed; cities set their own home-business sign limits.
UDO 154-9-090.F.5 prohibits displaying goods, stock in trade, or commodities outside a fully enclosed structure, and 154-9-090.F.10 prohibits external structural alterations or site improvements (including commercial-like lighting) that change the residential character of the lot. There is no allowance for a business sign advertising a suburban home occupation. Where nonresidential signage is permitted in A-1 and R districts (154-15-050), a wall sign may not exceed 24 square feet and a freestanding sign is capped at 12 feet in height.
An unpermitted home-business sign or outdoor display is a sign/zoning violation subject to removal orders and fines under the UDO sign regulations.
