Grass Valley, CA Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Signage for home businesses in unincorporated Nevada County is governed by Section 12.03.110(B) of the Zoning Regulations. The County's Home Business Permit packet states that one on-site, freestanding or wall sign for businesses requiring a permit is limited to a maximum of four square feet and may not be illuminated. The home business may not otherwise alter the appearance of the premises, including lighting, signage, and outdoor activity. Importantly, home businesses that are exempt from the Administrative Development Permit requirement, office uses conducted completely within a residence, and arts and crafts fabrication conducted completely within the primary residence, are subject to the standards but 'may not have signage nor generate customer traffic.' So the right to even a small sign depends on whether the business holds a permit: permit-holding home businesses may post a single four-square-foot, non-illuminated sign, while exempt home businesses may post none. These standards apply only in the unincorporated areas of Nevada County and do not include incorporated cities such as Nevada City, Grass Valley, or Truckee, which have their own sign codes.
