The county Land Use Code sharply limits residential signs. A name-only sign is allowed in any zone, but a sign carrying a business name or advertising is not permitted in residential and rural zones, so home occupations get essentially no commercial signage.
Signs in the unincorporated county are governed by Article 8 of the Land Use and Development Code (sections 8.4.801 to 8.4.807). Section 8.4.803 lists signs permitted in all zones, including a sign with only the name of a location, owner, or occupant, and expressly states the name of a business or other information may not be included on this sign. Commercial on-premise signs are allowed under 8.4.805 only in the Commercial, Light Industrial, and Industrial zones. Because home occupations sit in residential and rural zones, they cannot post a business-advertising sign. Signs may be installed up to but not over property lines and must comply with corner-visibility rules. Cities set their own sign rules inside city limits.
A prohibited business sign in a residential or rural zone is a sign-code violation and may be ordered removed under the Land Use and Development Code.
