Following a declared storm event the City of Venice activates Ch. 54 emergency debris collection rules: separated piles for vegetative debris, construction/demolition, household goods, and hazardous waste placed in the right-of-way for FEMA-reimbursable pickup.
Debris must be placed in the right-of-way curbside, but not in the street, on storm drains, or against utility structures. Vegetative debris (limbs, leaves) must be in a separate pile from construction debris (drywall, lumber), white goods (appliances), electronics, and household hazardous waste. Mixing piles delays pickup and can disqualify the City from FEMA reimbursement, which is then passed through to non-compliant residents.
Improperly separated piles can be left uncollected; persistent violations carry Code Enforcement Board fines of up to $500/day under Sec. 1-14.
