All roof construction and replacement in Corpus Christi must comply with the International Building Code (IBC) and International Residential Code (IRC) as adopted by the Texas Department of Insurance for the coastal windstorm zone. Design wind speeds range from 140 to 150 mph (3-second gust) for Risk Category II structures per ASCE 7-16. Roof sheathing must be properly fastened with ring-shank nails or approved fasteners per the adopted code schedule. Asphalt shingles must be tested to ASTM D3161 Class F and installed per manufacturer specifications on solidly sheathed decks with slopes of at least 2:12. Metal roof systems must meet equivalent uplift resistance. Roof-to-wall connections require hurricane straps or clips meeting TDI standards. A Windstorm Certificate of Compliance (WPI-8) is required after roof replacement for TWIA eligibility. Starting April 2026, new applications must comply with the 2024 IBC/IRC.
