Corpus Christi requires wind-resistant construction under the IBC and TWIA standards. Hurricane shutters and impact-resistant glazing must meet TDI windstorm certification for properties seeking TWIA insurance coverage.
Corpus Christi is located in the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) designated catastrophe area, requiring all construction to meet the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) building code for windstorm-resistant construction. Properties seeking TWIA coverage must have a Windstorm Certificate of Compliance (WPI-8) certifying that the structure meets applicable wind-resistant standards. Hurricane shutters, impact-resistant windows, or wind-resistant glazing systems must be rated for design wind speeds of 140 to 150 mph (3-second gust) per ASCE 7-16 for Risk Category II structures. Shutter systems must be tested to ASTM E1886/E1996 or Miami-Dade TAS standards for large-missile impact resistance. Retrofitting existing windows with approved shutters may qualify the property for a TWIA insurance discount. All shutter installations must be permitted through Development Services and inspected by a licensed TDI-qualified inspector. Contact (361) 826-3240 for permits.
