The county's zoning ordinance does not prohibit food gardens in residential zones. San Diego County actively encourages water-wise landscaping and turf replacement through rebate programs, and food gardens qualify as water-efficient alternatives to lawns. Front yard gardens must comply with general property maintenance requirements (maintained in good condition, no safety hazards) and must not obstruct public sidewalks or sight triangles at intersections. Fencing or structures associated with gardens must comply with height and setback requirements. In fire-prone areas of the county, gardens should not create additional fire fuel near structures.
