Colorado's 2024 turf law (SB24-005, amended by HB25-1113) bans nonfunctional and nonfunctional artificial turf on new nonresidential and common-interest projects starting Jan. 1, 2026. It does not restrict artificial turf on existing or new single-family residential lots.
Colorado Senate Bill 24-005 (signed March 15, 2024) prohibits local governments from allowing installation of nonfunctional turf, artificial turf, or invasive species on new nonresidential development beginning Jan. 1, 2026, covering commercial, institutional, industrial, and common-interest community property. House Bill 25-1113 refined this by defining permitted 'functional' artificial turf versus restricted 'nonfunctional' turf. Crucially, the law does not apply to existing development or new residential development β so a Castle Rock homeowner may install artificial turf on a single-family lot. HOAs must still allow water-wise options under SB23-178. Confirm HOA covenants before installing.
Nonfunctional turf installed on covered nonresidential/common-interest projects after Jan. 1, 2026 violates local ordinances adopted under SB24-005; residential lots are generally exempt.
