The City of Baton Rouge / Parish of East Baton Rouge caps grass and weeds at twelve inches. Vegetation that reaches or exceeds that height for more than two weeks is a code violation the owner must correct.
Sec. 12:351 of the City-Parish Code of Ordinances requires the owner or agent of a lot to keep grass and weeds below twelve (12) inches. Once vegetation stays at or above that height for more than two weeks, it is a nuisance. City-Parish FAQ material also treats weeds and brush at eight inches as an actionable nuisance. Exemptions apply to agricultural land, tracts of two or more acres (except portions within 100 feet of a residential zone), and contiguous properties with an active building permit. Complaints go to 3-1-1; Code Enforcement is (225) 389-8680. The consolidated city-parish government enforces one set of rules parish-wide (Baker, Zachary, and Central set their own).
Fines are $125 first violation, $250 for a second within two years, and $500 for third and later violations. The City-Parish may abate the growth and lien the cost to the owner.
