Colorado Springs requires weeds and grasses to be kept below 9 inches in height. If a property borders an alley, the owner is also responsible for the strip from the property line to the middle of the alley.
Under Colorado Springs City Code, weeds and grasses must be kept below 9 inches in height, a standard the City's Neighborhood Services Code Enforcement division lists among its most common code violations. The City's official guidance states: "Weeds and Grasses need to be kept below 9 inches in height. Remember, if your property borders an alley, you are responsible for the area from your property line to the middle of the alley." Property owners are also responsible for maintaining shrubs, weeds, and landscaping in the adjacent city right of way. Overgrown weeds are regulated as a nuisance under the weed provisions of the City Code (Chapter 9, Article 6, Part 3 - Weeds), which targets growth that becomes a fire hazard, a traffic and pedestrian hazard, that clogs drainageways, or that is designated as a noxious weed or undesirable plant. Land in its natural state that has not been disturbed by digging, scraping, or plowing is excluded from the weed-height requirement.
Grass or weeds over 9 inches is a code violation handled by Neighborhood Services Code Enforcement. The owner receives notice and a time to mow; if not corrected, the City may abate (mow) the property and assess the cost back to the owner. Report or respond via the Neighborhood Services Code Enforcement form or (719) 444-7891.
