San Diego County requires vegetation in defensible space zones to be maintained at no more than 6 inches above ground. General property maintenance standards apply throughout unincorporated areas. Overgrown lawns may be cited as a nuisance by Code Compliance.
In defensible space zones (most of unincorporated San Diego County due to wildfire risk), vegetation must be maintained at no more than 6 inches above ground. This applies to grass, weeds, and other low vegetation within the required defensible space zones. Outside defensible space zones, the County's general property maintenance and nuisance abatement provisions apply. Overgrown vegetation that harbors vermin, creates fire hazards, or constitutes a public nuisance may be cited by Code Compliance. The County issues annual weed abatement notices to remind property owners of maintenance requirements.
Overgrown vegetation may result in citations, fines, and forced abatement with costs added to the property tax bill.
